Magazzu releases NACo donors

Cumberland County Freeholder Director Louis Magazzu released a list of donors and expenditures for his unsuccessful run for a leadership positions in the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Magazzu raised and spent about $78,000 in total to try to become the organization’s Second Vice President this year and in an aborted attempt last year.

The biggest single contributor to his campaign was SLRD Company-Mullica Hill LLC, a developer that specializes in environmental remediation. They gave Magazzu $10,000. The next largest was state Sen./Gloucester County Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney, who gave Magazzu $6,000. Several engingeering firms gave $5,000, as did Governor Corzine.

Magazzu used county funds to pay for past trips to NACo, but pledged he would not for the campaign.

The side campaign has become an issue in Magazzu’s hotly contested reelection race for freeholder. Magazzu said that he is not required to disclose his contributions by law, but did so voluntarily.

“When I first began the race in 2007 I did not solicit contributions from any individuals or entities who did work for Cumberland County. When the second attempt began some political supporters indicated that they wanted to be of assistance in my NACo run. I had a legal opinion which indicated that there would be no prohibition for such assistance. I told anyone who wanted to contribute that if they did business with the county I would prefer to stay within the $5200 total candidate limits of the election law enforcement commission even though there was no legal requirement that I do so,” wrote Magazzi in a statement.
“Even though I was unsuccessful, my close association with NACO has resulted in the county implementing a NACO prescription card program which has saved our residents nearly $500,000 in the last eighteen months. We also have gotten involved with a national network to sell surplus county equipment for a greater return at less expense.”
