ALBANY—First it was the beard, now it's the mustache. And David Paterson joins the ranks of clean-shaven executives.
"Additional deficits mean additional cutting, and it's likely before the end of this process you will see me bald," Paterson told reporters, when Newsday's James T. Madore asked after a leaders meeting. "My son told me after the last expedition he wanted to see what I looked like without a mustache, so I'll see him later today and he'll get back to you."
There could be further political consequences here. The American Mustache Institute, which lauded Paterson when he shaved the beard, issued a statement decrying Paterson's "selfish, and ignorant act."
"We are indeed disappointed to learn of the shaving of Governor Patterson's lower nose accoutrement, because not only was he vastly better looking with it, but our studies have shown his future employment options would have also been 17.3 percent greater with a mustache, than without," wrote someone claiming to be Dr. Abraham Froman, the organization's CEO. "The Governor also has done a great disservice to people of Mustached American descent who were willing to support him in his reelection efforts, as our community will now more than likely shun him since each time a mustache is shaved, an angel in heaven dies and falls to earth according to the Dead Sea Scrolls."
Tracy Sefl, a spokeswoman for the Paterson 2010 campaign, was unperturbed.
"In 1968, it was ‘Clean for Gene,'" she said in a statement, referencing the campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy. "For 2010, it's ‘Shave for Dave.'"
