Westboro Baptist Chuch Descends on Brooklyn

The racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic Westboro Baptist Church is coming to Brooklyn for Yom Kippur to protest the borough at large, and, of course, generate a lot of publicity. The Kansas-based church (led by Fred Phelps) is known for picketing the funerals of AIDS victims, Matthew Shepard, Coretta Scott King, and Mr. Rogers; protesting the Holocaust Memorial Museum; and attributing deadly natural disasters to God's wrath. This weekend, they plan to target a Fort Greene high school, as well as several synagogues.

"These guys are really sick," Assemblyman Dov Hikind told the Daily News. "We have to make their lives miserable when they come to Brooklyn."

“Don’t flatter yourself, Brooklyn,” A Westboro representative told the Brooklyn Paper. “We serve the living God. You mess with us, you’ll get double destruction for what you do.”
