When Bill Thompson released his own poll last night saying he had closed the gap between he and Michael Bloomberg to a perfectly manageable 8 points, the mayor’s press team shot back with a statement saying, basically, ‘Why don’t we wait and see what Marist has to say tomorrow.’

Well, Marist has spoken.

They have Mr. Thompson at the same percentage Mr. Thompson did — 38 percent — but there’s a little disparity in the numbers for Mr. Bloomberg. The Thompson poll had him at 46 percent; Marist has him at 53 percent. So instead of being an 8-point race, it’s probably more like a 15-point race.

Whatever the gap might be, Mr. Thompson has five days left to close it.
