Michael Bloomberg isn’t looking to make much of an issue out of whether to rename a street in Queens after Sean Bell, who police fatally shot on his wedding day in 2006. At a press conference on the West Side this morning, Bloomberg told reporters, “I have said that when a bill comes before me listing a lot of names, I will sign the bill.”
Bloomberg said he’ll sign this bill, like he’s done with other street renaming situations, rather than weigh into the fights about which particular streets and names are at issue. Or, as Bloomberg put it today, “rather than just enflame the situation, I will sign the bill.”
Street renamings are one of the major activities that keeps people busy on the other side of City Hall, where the debate over Sean Bell has been raging.
