ALBANY—Less than a week after Hiram Monserrate voted against a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, the Empire State Pride Agenda has endorsed Jose Peralta for his Senate seat.
“José Peralta has demonstrated time and time again that he is a champion of equality and justice for all New Yorkers and has consistently represented the interests of his district in the New York State Assembly,” said Alan Van Capelle, the organization’s executive director, said in a statement. “His record on LGBT issues demonstrates that he does not duck-and-run when our bills come up for a vote. He has stood up for us in the Assembly, and we will stand with him in his race for the State Senate.”
Gay advocates are targeting senators who voted against the measure, and this is likely the first of several targeted endorsements. Monserrate is an easy target; Queens’ party leaders have said he needs to go and other elected Democrats have coalesced behind Peralta’s candidacy.
