U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton) told NBC News that Tinton Falls resident David Goldman has been reunited with his nine-year-old son and that they are returning home to New Jersey “ASAP.” Smith has been in Brazil with Goldman and accompanied the family to the airport for their flight to the U.S.
U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken) issued a statement said he was pleased that the Brazilian courts finally recognized “the legal and moral path forward.”
“This is such a happy day in which a New Jersey family kept apart for five long years has finally reunited,” said Menendez. “Anyone who has talked to David or heard him speak tearfully about being apart from his son knows how determined he was to see this day and how joyful he must be at this moment. I am thrilled for him and Sean.”
Smith, Menendez and U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) played roles in helping Goldman gain legal custody of his son.
