At 9:34 p.m. last night, Mr. Schumer issued a two-sentence statement that feels a lot like a post-mortem:

"The country is speaking to us, and we will hear them in the agenda we pursue over the next year. Our focus must be on jobs, the economy and delivering for the middle class."

Though Mr. Schumer didn't mention health care, the Times reports that Democratic leaders are meeting today, in an attempt to figure out what to do now.
