There is no politically correct way to say this: Frank Lautenberg’s ambulance ride and hospitalization is a huge news story because he’s 86-years-old and any issue relating to the five-term Democrat’s health immediately creates speculation of a Senate vacancy. The Senator seems to be fine, his spokesman says, but there is no shortage of politicos from both parties who have spent the last year talking about the Senator’s life expectancy. Lautenberg’s health is national news because a vacancy would give his seat to the Republicans – their second blue state seat in a month. Republican Gov. Christopher Christie would appoint a new Senator who would serve until the results of a November 2010 special election were certified.
