Assemblyman Carmen Arroyo’s grandson plead guilty to embezzling $115,000 from a non-profit group in order to pay for things like campaign contributions and “new flooring” for the assemblywoman, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
The office did not name Arroyo, but did say Izquierdo is the “grandson” of “Assembly Member #1” and “is also the nephew of City Council Member #1.” That would be Maria del Carmen Arroyo.
Richard Izquierdo Arroyo “paid approximately $7,000 to the campaign accounts of Assembly Member #1,” and paid about $4,750 to a political organization “of which Assembly Member #1 was a member,” and spent $3,900 “for the installation of flooring at the district office of Assembly Member #1.”
He paid $2,300 for “air travel by Assembly Member #1 and City Council Member #1” in 2007.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Izquierdo “betrayed those he was meant to serve” and stole money in order to “fill the coffers of his favored politicians.”
