Incumbent Democratic Rep. Caorlyn Maloney announced she got the endorsement of the pro-choice P.A.C. EMILY’s List.
Maloney has served the Upper East Side and parts of Queens for nine-terms, and is being challenged by Reshma Saujani, who has touted her youth and Wall Street experience.
Given her record, Maloney’s support from EMILY’s List isn’t unexpected, but will help her raise money and expand her pressence online, something Saujani is relying on.
Here’s the release:
EMILY’s LIST ENDORSES CAROLYN MALONEY FOR CONGRESS
NEW YORK – EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest financial resource for women candidates, endorsed Rep. Carolyn Maloney for re-election in NY-14.
In the 2007-2008 election cycle, EMILY’s List raised more than $43 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates by helping them build strong campaigns and mobilizing women voters to turn out and vote.
“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the EMILY’s List,” said Rep. Maloney. “EMILY’s List is synonymous with grassroots organizing that spurs the development of strong women leaders with principled core values – the same values that are a central part of my agenda in Washington.”
In announcing its endorsement, EMILY’s List cited Maloney’s nationally-recognized advocacy for women’s rights and family issues. As the former co-chair of the Congressional Women’s Caucus, Maloney spearheaded the Debbie Smith Act which increases funding for law enforcement to process DNA rape kits, termed “the most important piece of anti-rape legislation that Congress has ever passed.”
“EMILY’s List is proud to support Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney in her 2010 re-election campaign,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Since she was elected to Congress in 1992, Congresswoman Maloney has been a leader in Washington and a tremendous advocate for New York City. She has earned a reputation as a tireless supporter for women and families and the protection of a woman’s right to choose. I know Carolyn will continue to make New Yorkers proud for years to come.”
With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY’s List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY’s List has worked to elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House of Representatives, 15 to the U.S. Senate, nine governors, and hundreds of women to state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
