The New York County chairwoman, Jennifer Saul, said she and her committee are currently uncommitted to either gubernatorial candidate, Rick Lazio or Steve Levy.
But she did rebuff one criticism of Levy, which is that his switch from the Democratic to Republican Party makes him less eligible for the party’s support than Lazio.
Saul said Levy’s party switch was a bigger step than Michael Bloomberg took last year, when all five county organizations in the city endorsed him.
“I consider Levy different from Bloomberg, because Levy was willing to switch registration. Bloomberg ran on our line as an independent. It’s a very different thing,” Saul said in a brief telephone interview. “He is now a Republican, and that is different from being an independent.”
