Matt Bai Becomes Times (Newspaper) Political Columnist

Calderone has Bill Keller’s memo announcing changes on the political desk. In the biggest move, Matt Bai is transferring from The Times Magazine to The Times newspaper. He will be a political columnist. Bai joined The Times Magazine in 2002 from Newsweek. I can’t remember any other examples of an exclusive Times Magazine writer dropping downstairs to join the newspaper. If you do, please email me!

Jeff Zeleny, as expected, becomes the lead political reporter, and Jim Rutenberg will become the investigations guy in Washington.

Ben Smith makes the point that Adam Nagourney’s job has essentially been broken up into a few parts—Zeleny being the lead writer, Bai offering the analysis.
