More memorable moments from the new CSPAN video archive. Here’s Chuck Schumer with an interesting haircut and a bar graph in 1987 (as far back as the archives go), chairing a hearing titled “Plight of the Homeless.”
“The vast majority of homeless people are people like you and me, who simply can’t afford, and can’t buy, housing,” Mr. Schumer said. (The sound is bad for the first 25 minutes; just focus on the hair.)
At about the 13-minute mark, we hear from then-Congressman Floyd Flake, who’s been in the news lately as part of the defunct Aquedeuct deal. And Mayor Ed Koch is behind the homeless persons throughout their testimony.
And here’s one of Kirsten Gillibrand, honoring National Hunting and Fishing Day in 2007, her first year in Congress.
“One week from today, turkey season will begin in upstate New York. Every year my mother and brother are among the very first in the woods when the season begins. My mother takes great pride in her ability to shoot a turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner every year,” Ms. Gillibrand said. She has since become one of the Senate’s most ardent gun control advocates.
