Bill Keller Confirms New York Times Paywall Plans

Bill Keller spoke at a Foreign Press Association dinner last night and confirmed that the Gray Lady plans to put a paywall up on its Web site beginning in January. Details are sketchy at the moment, but the confirmation marked a reversal for the executive editor, who called January reports that the paper was looking to establish a paywall “long in speculation.”

The statement is a far cry from Rupert Murdoch’s bullish outlook on paywalls, and seems to jive with previous rumors that The Times might be looking to follow a Financial Times model.
