    When Prying Eyes Are Smiling

Buyers may not need another stunningly expensive apartment to choose from, but the rest of us certainly enjoy the chance to look at one. This $42 million stunner went on the market last week, and we promise it’s got plenty to offer prying eyes.

The apartment spans the top three floors of 990 Fifth Avenue. That seems downright greedy in a six-apartment building an arm’s reach from the Met and Central Park. The question of what exactly one does with that much prime real estate is answered on the 12th floor by the sprawling foyer with marble floors and carved double doors leading to a living room and dining room, according to the Sotheby's listing.

The 13th floor has a library and bedrooms. The master bedroom and terrace manage to take up the entire 14th floor, which isn’t a problem when you’ve got two floors to spare.

The décor is gothic chic, which will satisfy any New Yorker who aspires to be European nobility, or simply to stare at their beautiful homes. —Laura Kusisto
