As the Observer previously reported, the owners of SPiN New York, the Ping-Pong social club on East 23rd Street, have been shopping a reality show (narrated by club member Susan Sarandon) to networks for the past couple of months about their club. According to Grub Street, BBC America has agreed to produce the show and filming began last week. Its title: The Magnus Effect.
“It will focus on some of the interesting personalities in table tennis and the growing of our business,” co-owner Jonathan Bricklin told us in March. These personalities, he said, would include Korean Ping-Pong player and model Soo Yeon Lee; Wally Green, “the hip-hop rapping Ping-Pong player”; Marty Reisman, the 1958 U.S. men’s singles champion; and Michael Landers, the 15-year-old U.S. national Ping-Pong champion.
In addition to Ping-Pong, Grub Street reports that the show will also be about Ducks, the club’s restaurant, and its chef Will Horowitz, who prepares dishes in a basement kitchen without ventilation.
