After a week’s worth of goading and dodging, it turns out Rick Lazio and Carl Paladino will attend a candidates’ forum and a debate on the evening of August 30. They’ll just be 250 miles apart.
Paladino has been taunting Lazio to attend a debate hosted by YNN in Syracuse, even threatening to bring his chicken man to stand in if Lazio doesn’t show. Lazio had said it was up to his campaign staff.
Now, it looks like it will just be Paladino and the bird.
Lazio has apparently RSVP’ed to a candidates’ forum that same night, hosted by TeaParty365 at Baruch College in Manhattan. The group’s founder, David Webb–who previously criticized Paladino for suggesting he might use the Tea Party name—told Crain’s that Paladino was invited but had a scheduling conflict.
Paladino’s camp isn’t letting up. They just sent out an email calling on Lazio to abandon the race if he won’t debate. “If Rick Lazio can’t stand the heat now he needs to get out of this race because he’ll never find the guts to confront Andrew Cuomo,” Paladino said in the statement.
Lazio has said he would prefer to debate Cuomo and that “the main event is in November.”
