Open Afternoon Recap: Favorites Win, Beer and Music

Crowds, crowds, crowds. The first five days are always the most chaotic, so why not start drinking at noon?

No major upsets in the first day. Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Melanie Oudin all advanced with straight set victories. Robin Soderling and Gael Monfils both needed five sets to prevail, but did so. Sam Stosur is moving into a third set now against her outfit-twin, Elena Vesnina, but we like her chances.

Nope, not much drama on the blue courts on the Opening Day Session, but these violin ladies (photo above) certainly had the crowd gripped near the entrance of Ashe. What exactly are they playing? A little Sting, some Springsteen, and a lot of stuff that poured into the outercourts. Only at the Open.
