Program: What We Love This Week (August 4 – August 11)

If all other plans fail, remember that nothing is as fun as winning. To satisfy your craving for intellectual sparring, head over to the Bowery Poetry Club for its Book-in-Hand Reading Group, where discussion centers on the classics. It’s not officially a contest to make the smartest comment, but we all know that’s what everyone will be thinking (Tuesday, Aug. 10, 5 p.m., free). For more forays into your collegiate past, check out Vintage Posters, an auction at Swann Auction Galleries. It’s a chance to buy the original of that knock-off you taped to your dorm wall. Prices start in the thousands (Wednesday, Aug. 4, 10 a.m., free). If you prefer to watch rather than participate in competition, Baruch College is hosting the Manhattan International Netball Club 10-Year Anniversary Tournament. Try to be the first of your friends to figure out what exactly netball is (Saturday, Aug. 7, 9 a.m., free). For other unusual sports, Hunter College Sportsplex hosts an installment of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, as Queens of Pain faces Bronx Gridlock in a battle of the outer boroughs (Saturday, Aug. 7, 6:30 p.m., $19.99-$35).
