When Caroline Giuliani was stopped by a security guard and a sales clerk at Sephora on the Upper East Side yesterday afternoon for stealing make-up, she took out her ID card and said, “I’m an actress.”
According to the report from the New York Post, 20-year-old Ms. Giuliani is indeed a theater student at Harvard. Perhaps she was just preparing for a complicated role!
The young actress was apparently seen stuffing five items worth more than $100 into her jacket a little before 2 p.m. But when she was arrested, the authorities found $320 in cash on her.
When the police arrived on the scene and asked if she was related to the former mayor, Ms. Giuliani reportedly said, “Yes, I’m his daughter.”
Initially the store managers insisted on pressing charges, but when they heard this bit of information, they changed their minds. It was too late. Ms. Giuliani was taken to the 19th Precinct in handcuffs and charged with petit larceny. She was wearing what looked like black leggings, a loose purple NYU t-shirt, and white sneakers without laces. The young thief was released last night to her mother, former TV reporter Donna Hanover, with a desk-appearance ticket and a future court date.
The former mayor was not there, but a spokeswoman said, “This is a personal matter, and Mayor Giuliani asks the media to respect the privacy of his daughter at this time.”
“Once we review the case, we will decide whether or not to file a criminal complaint,” Erin Duggan, a spokeswoman for Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr., told the Post.
