Though it didn’t make Pitchfork’s Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s (it was an honorable mention), it seems that Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing” is poised to become the official theme song of fashion’s ’90s revival. We’ve heard it at two shows so far this week — Alex Casertano‘s and Charlotte Ronson‘s — and since both were DJ’d by bona fide hip music types (Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek and Ms. Ronson’s sister Samantha, respectively), we trust their judgment.
“Kool Thing” was released on Sonic Youth’s 1990 album Goo, so its inclusion in the shows conforms nicely to the stereotype that fashion moves in strict 20-year cycles. Some chart-toppers from 1990 include Michael Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” and Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby,” neither of which we have heard on the runways so far.
