The Daily Beast has added an "editor's note" to contributor Elaine Lafferty's defense of billionaire David Koch, in which Mr. Koch responded to New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer's profile of him and his brother. But the correction doesn't tell the whole story.

The Daily Beast posted Ms. Lafferty's article before Ms. Mayer had a chance to respond, according to the note. The Daily Beast editors also wrote that they regretted not disclosing that Ms. Lafferty worked as a consultant for both the McCain-Palin and Hillary Clinton campaigns in 2008.

Here is the full text of the correction, which appears at the bottom of the second page of Ms. Lafferty's article:

The Daily Beast regrets not contacting Jane Mayer directly before the posting of this article. The writer contacted The New Yorker PR department on Sept. 9 via phone and email, submitting questions for Mayer, but The Daily Beast posted the article before she responded.

The New Yorker made extensive efforts to allow David Koch to respond during the reporting of their article. The Daily Beast also should have noted that the writer who interviewed Koch had been a consultant for the McCain/Palin campaign as well as the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008.

Ms. Lafferty was paid at least $50,000 for work as a consultant on the McCain-Palin campaign in 2008, according to Federal Election Commission filings obtained by the Media Mob. The FEC press office confirmed that Ms. Lafferty was never paid any money by Ms. Clinton's campaign.

"I'm grateful they ran a correction — it was totally called for," Ms. Mayer wrote in an email to the Media Mob this morning.
