I was waiting all day for either an upset, or at least a compelling match, so I could drill down and write about that one for you, but alas, it never came! Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic defeated Robin Soderling and Gael Monfils, respectively, in straight set matches today to advance the Men’s semifinals on Friday. Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva also advanced to the semifinals.
Other than a few matches here or there, we have not seen a lot in the way of upsets at this U.S. Open making for as compelling a final four days as we could hope. We’ve got Federer-Djokovic for a fourth straight year in the semis. We’ve got Clijsters-Venus in the semis. It sets up the possibility of two outstanding finals on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, and we’re hoping that this quick-and-easy tennis does pay off at some point.
