Writer Yiyun Li was among the 23 recipients of the 2010 MacArthur “genius” grants, it was announced last night. The grant awards Ms. Li, and the other winners, with $500,000 over the next five years, with no strings attached
The LA Times was quick to post an interview with Ms. Li, who seemed ecstatic about the news. Ms. Li is currently an assistant professor at UC Davis, and said that for her the grant means “a little bit less teaching, a little more time to focus on writing.”
Earlier this year, Ms. Li was among The New Yorker‘s “20 Under 40” list of fiction writers to watch.
Just last week, Michael Miller profiled Ms. Li in this paper, finding her latest short story collection collection “filled with the conflict, and ultimate harmony, between the expansive and the miniscule.”
