American television’s longest-running concert program, Austin City Limits, has been on the air since 1976; it’s been a home to Chet Atkins, Billy Bragg, Tom Waits and Tammy Wynette, among not a few others. This Sunday, Rosanne Cash makes her eighth, encore appearance. Luckily for us, she’s playing some of her father’s favorite songs.
Rosanne Cash first played Austin City Limits in 1983. Johnny Cash followed in 1987. This week’s show is a reunion of sorts, in that Rosanne is playing songs from The List—an album that draws from her dad’s list of 100 essential country songs. Cash has a crack band behind her, and the episode features Brandi Carlile’s first appearance on the program; in a sense, Rosanne’s passing the torch that Johnny passed down to her.
