With its market cap at about $1.1 billion today, The New York Times Co. is now, by one measure, smaller than nanoblogging platform Twitter, Business Insider pointed out.

Techcrunch reported last week that insider info puts the social networking site's value around $1.6 billion, even though the company has yet to bring in substantial revenue.
The last official evaluation, in September 2009, estimated Twitter's worth at $1.1 billion

The closeness in value is just the latest sign of the way we read news now, and of the closing gap between the nation's paper of record and the sounding board for 100 million people tweeting. Twitter is four years old, and The Times is going on 160.
