Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is trying to help out two of her former colleagues in the House.
Gillibrand sent an email to supporters this morning, asking them to contribute to the recount efforts of endangered congressmen Dan Maffei and Tim Bishop.
“Dan and Tim have both taken courageous stands to get health care to people who need it and to protect our environment,” Gillibrand wrote. “We simply cannot afford to lose these critical allies for working families in the House.”
New York has already lost five House seats, and if Maffei and Bishop lose, the seven-seat loss would be the highest in the nation. Both congressmen currently trail in the vote tallies–Maffei by 729 votes, to Ann Marie Buerkle; and Bishop by 383 votes, to Randy Altschuler. Both challengers are attending the freshman orientation at the Capitol this weekend.
Here’s the full email from Senator Gillibrand:
Election Day was two weeks ago, but there are still two critical races to be decided right here in New York. Congressmen Tim Bishop (NY-1) and Dan Maffei (NY-25) have always been champions for middle class New Yorkers, but right now, their races are still too close to call.
Dan and Tim have both taken courageous stands to get health care to people who need it and to protect our environment. We simply cannot afford to lose these critical allies for working families in the House.
These races are headed for recounts, and Tim and Dan must have the resources to ensure every single vote is counted. We can’t allow any corners to be cut.
Thanks for your continued confidence in New York’s Democrats and your support of a fair and transparent election.
