This morning IAC announced that Match.com CEO Greg Blatt will succeed Barry Diller as CEO.
The transition comes as a surprise–so soon after Diller negotiated the complex marriage of two bleeding media properties–but Blatt’s resume suggests complicated transactions and mergers are his strength.
According to a Columbia Law School Magazine profile, Blatt worked as Martha Stewart’s lawyer as a junior associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. When he was less than four years out of law school, she asked him to take her company public and appointed him general counsel of Martha Stewart Living Omnimiedia.
In 1994 2004, Diller snagged Blatt to serve as executive vice president and general counsel to IAC, where he quickly helped spin off their travel properties into Expedia, Inc. He stepped up as CEO of IAC subsidiary Match.com in 2009, just as the dating site was selling its European operations.
