Google opened the doors to it Chrome Web Store today. Users can sample apps optimized for the Chrome browser. Soon these apps will also run on ultra-lite Chrome OS notebooks.
Featured in the top twenty most popular apps are offerings from The New York Times, and local startups Aviary and Gilt Groupe.
The New York Times Chrome App offers users the ability to download stories and read them offline, a big plus for busy subway commuters.
Aviary has their full compliment of creative tools in the Chrome Store, with their Advanced Image editor ranking among the most popular.
Last but not least, Gilt Groupe’s Chrome App has earned a five star rating for its offering of discount designer clothing.
Web apps represent a feedback loop from the success of smartphones, where lightweight mobile apps dedicated to a single use have powered a boom in e-commerce.
Prominent placement in the Chrome Store is a big opportunity for a startup like Aviary to expand its reach. Chrome’s user base has exlpoded from 30 million in December of 2009 to 120 million today.
