Paul Thomas Anderson is currently making moves to adapt Thomas Pynchon’s latest book, Inherent Vice, into a movie, Vulture reports.
The site says that Mr. Anderson is either in the treatment or early script stage of the process. His agency, Creative Artists, has apparently been trying to attach Robert Downey Jr. to star as the noir send-up’s stoner detective lead.
The news is not entirely unexpected. Publisher’s Weekly reported that CAA was shopping the book’s film rights back in June of 2009. The movie would be Mr. Pynchon’s first big-screen adaptation.
