From where The Observer was seated at the Betsey Johnson runway show at Lincoln Center yesterday, we could see Ms. Johnson in the wings backstage, flailing her arms and coaching the models before they stomped out on the runway (the models replicated the movements the best they could; it looked a little more frigid, though). This was no small task. Ms. Johnson showed 91 looks, separated into two sections, the “Black Tag” collection, featuring the more expensive pieces worn by professional models, and “Pink Patch,” with the cheaper designs, which her staff showcased down the runway. The two sections were titled, “He Loves Me Not” and “He Loves Me.” Hey, it was Valentine’s Day.
After that marathon trudge down the catwalk, Ms. Johnson came out and did her usual schtick: a few cartwheels, a little disrobing. She grabbed Patricia Field, Ms. Johnson’s doppleganger, sitting in the front row. The two danced and twirled to “It’s In His Kiss” and embraced. With a slap on the behind from Ms. Johnson, Ms. Field took her seat.
The show ended with a caravan of models holding body-sized fake flowers, wearing t-shirts, pink underwear and nothing else save a red heart pinned in their hair. It said, “I Fucking Love You.” Thanks, Betsey.
