It is always interesting to imagine who a designer has in mind as their ideal customer. For Prabal Gurung it must be a rock star’s wife who has to go to a dinner with Hollywood director after spending a week at Burning Man (we think the black featherweight leather dress with a hand-laced bodice). Or maybe he’s thinking of a woman who has just spent a week on a yacht in the Mediterranean and now has to jet off to an oligarch’s palace in Moscow (hence the ivory hand-knit textured alpaca sweater dress). One dress was vermilion green with ostrich feathers and made the model look like a very chic, angry crow. Mr. Gurung does not stint on his materials:many of the clothes seemed to have Swarovski elements hand-stitched onto them and the amount of technical engineering that goes into his work is impressive. His crowd was decidedly more European than most, with more fur coats than you could shake a stick at. Perhaps you don’t have to travel too far to find the perfect place to wear Gurung’s looks; at his afterparty in the new Mr. H bar, a venue with warm harem-like lighting and deep banquettes to sink into, Mr. Gurung’s designs would have been right on message.
