In December, Sandy Mactaggart donated his $23 million estate outside Edmonton to the University of Alberta. He and wife Cecile were moving to the Bahamas for their health, according to The Vancouver Sun, but it looks like they will be making a layover in New York first. Mr. Mactaggart, who made a fortune over the last half-century as one of Western Canada's largest residential developers, just purchased a three-bedroom behemoth on the third floor of the Sherry Netherland for $11.1 million.

The home was cobbled together from six separate residences, according to city records, and was last owned by uptown luxury hoppers Barbara Girard and Rose Gutmacher—they've lived at the Waldorf, Palace and Plaza hotels in recent years—before they sold it to 781 Fifth Associates in 2005 for $7.2 million. The LLC is connected to Roberto De Guardiola, who also owns a grand townhouse on 64th Street and an estate in Southampton, and the De Guardiola Childrens Trust—perhaps, then, the Sherry pad was for his kids.

"The uber chic triple mint renovation reflects a sophisticated aesthetic that is both elegant and refined," declares the listing from Sotheby's Serena Boardman. The 500-square-foot living room looks directly onto Grand Army Plaza and has one of the home's two fireplaces. The dining room features an Arabesque trompe l'oeil, which should help keep the Mactaggarts warm when they cannot make it to the tropics.

Ms. Boardman did not return requests for comment.
