Stellato holds off on support for incumbents as he considers redistricting

After shredding Democrats to pieces in the last two election cycles, Bergen County Republican Chairman Bob Yudin wants to keep his streak alive with a sweep. That would mean a GOP dump this year of incumbent Democratic freeholders Bernadette McPherson and David Ganz and a successful successor to now-Bergen County Executive (and former clerk) Kathe Donovan.

But don’t be so sure those two freeholders will be the party’s nominees to go after their seats again, said new Bergen County Democratic Committee Chairman Lou Stellato.

“They’re exploring all the options,” Stellato told PolitickerNJ.com, a day after Republicans nailed down Anthony Rottino of Woodcliff Lakes and East Rutherford Councilman Joel Brizzi as their organization-backed candidates for freeholder.

Stellato tentatively has April 10th picked out for a Democratic Party convention to select candidates both for county and legislative offices. Will he back McPherson and Ganz for freeholder?

“It’s too early to tell,” Stellato said. “I need to keep my options open. We’ll see what happens with redistricting.”

If the maps shift in such a way that benefits Ganz or McPherson for a leap up to the Legislature, they may be rerouted, Stelatto said. Could be – he just doesn’t know yet, as 11th member Prof. Alan Rosenthal and Democrats and Republicans on the reapportionment commission continue to hammer away behind closed doors to get a statewide legislative map that will hold up for the next decade.

“We also have a clerk’s candidate we need to get this year,” Stellato said.
