Three months ago Cathie Black became schools chancellor after a highly successful career in the private sector. And I think she has done an admirable job plunging her self into the work and she has worked tirelessly to learn the in and outs of the system and I have nothing but respect and admiration for her and for the work that she has done.

She loves New York and she wants to do it right for the families and students that we serve. She and I met this morning and we have mutually agreed that it is in the city’s best interests that she step down as chancellor. I will say I take full responsibly for the fact that this has not worked out as either of us had hoped or expected. But now it is time to look forward, not back.
