Non-public school charter conversion bill clears committee

A bill, A2806, that would allow non-public schools to convert to charter schools by having the school’s governing body submit an application to the state Commissioner of Education was approved in the Assembly Education Committee Monday.

The prime sponsors are Mila Jasey, (D-27), South Orange, and Albert Coutinho, (D-29), Newark.

“We’re not talking about public money going to a religious education environment,’’ said Coutinho. The resulting charter school could not have a religious curriculum.
