Orthodox Group Lobbies Against Gay Marriage

The Yeshiva World News has a scoop this morning about Agudath Israel, an influential Orthodox Jewish lobbying organization, sending a message to its members urging them to fight Andrew Cuomo’s gay marriage push.

“The New York State Legislature is expected to vote soon on a bill that would legalize same-gender marriage,” writes executive vice-president Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel. “This bill is both morally and legally unacceptable, and could lead to serious negative consequences.”

YWN also notes that the race to replace (likely) outgoing State Sen. Carl Kruger factors into Agudath’s involvement, with likely Democratic nominee Lew Fidler a supporter of same-sex marriage. They write that the Orthodox community is casting about for an opponent, and float Bloomberg aide Fred Kreizman. (They also note, however “it is unclear if Fred shares his boss – Mayor Bloomberg’s view on same-gender marriage.”)

  1. Fred Kreizman doesn’t currently live in the district (he once pondered a run against State Senator Diane Savino), so he’d have to hope that the election happens on schedule and hope that more favorable boundaries exist after redistricting
