TRENTON – The Assembly approved four charter school bills this evening.
The chamber voted 47-17, with 17 abstentions, to approve bill A3852, which would require voter approval in order for charter schools to be established within their communities.
A3356, approved 72-6, provides that students will be selected for enrollment in a charter school through a lottery, with the name of each student in that district to be placed in the lottery. If the parents or guardians of a student who is selected through the lottery decide not to enroll the student, then the charter school will fill that enrollment space with a student from the waiting list.
A2806, passed, 59-14-4, permits conversion of high-performing schools in a failing district into a charter school.
And A3083, approved 64-8-6, allows entities other than the state Education commissioner to become authorizers of charter schools.
