Larry Kirshbaum, publisher at Amazon's new New York-based imprint, has named his first hire: Julia Cheiffetz, currently a senior editor at HarperCollins, has been named editorial director. Kirshbaum announced the hire in an e-mail to agents:

Julia’s sharp editorial sensibility and devotion to her authors, combined with her passion for new technology, makes her the perfect choice. She offers a unique blend of an entrepreneurial mind-set built upon a strong belief in the bedrock values of traditional literary and commercial publishing.

Julia was most recently at HarperCollins where she published the NYT bestsellers, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, 5th Avenue, 5 AM, and How to Write a Sentence. Prior to Harper she worked at HarperStudio. Julia began her publishing career at Random House where she worked for six years. She will start on Aug. 1. Please join me in welcoming her.

Note emphasis on "bedrock values of traditional literary and commercial publishing."
