Michael Grimm Is Pro Light Bulb Choice [Updated]

michael grimm microphone Michael Grimm Is Pro Light Bulb Choice [Updated]The office of Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm just sent out word that he joined the G.O.P. majority in the House of Representatives and voted to kill government mandates on light bulb efficiency.

“It’s no secret that the government has grown way too big, but when it starts limiting our choice in light bulbs, you’ve got to be kidding me!” Grimm said in a statement “Americans don’t need a nanny state telling them what to put in their lamps. They’re quite capable of making that decision on their own.”

Overturning an Obama administration plan to phase out energy efficient light bulbs has been a cause celebre for the G.O.P., who say that it limits Americans’ freedom of choice. The bill has been pushed by Tea Party favorites and 2012 presidential possibilities Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry.

As Grimm’s office notes: ” The new light bulbs do increase energy efficiency, but they have been met with opposition due to their high cost, weak light, and dangers surrounding the mercury released when the bulbs break.”

Adds Grimm: “The government should not be picking winners and losers on this issue, especially when it comes at the expense of the taxpayer. In this economy, mandating that consumers buy expensive light bulbs is absurd. We all want to move towards energy efficient options, but it shouldn’t be through a mandate that breaks the banks of America’s hard-working taxpayers.”

Update:

Josh Schwerin of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee passes along the following:

“The government should not be picking winners and losers on this issue, especially when it comes at the expense of the taxpayer,” said Grimm.

What a dim bulb this guy is….

Also, please note in your piece the fact that these new standards passed in 2007 (who was President then…hmmm….if I could only remember. I know it wasn’t Obama)

    1. Who was representing Grimm district back then? If only I could remember….Oh, it was Fossella! So what is your point? This was a stupid idea in 2007 and it is still a stupid idea today. I guess you are okay with children getting mercury poisoning.
