The Men The Mayor Will Marry: John Feinblatt and Jonathan Mintz

They’ll be wearing dark suits — not tuxedos — and after 14 years of celebrating their first date — May 9 — the inscription on their rings will mark a different anniversary.

From tomorrow on, John Feinblatt and Jonathan Mintz will celebrate July 24, 2011 — the first day same-sex marriage is legal in New York.

Feinblatt, a chief advisor to Mayor Bloomberg, and Mintz, the city’s Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, will be married by the mayor tomorrow at Gracie Mansion, making it the first same-sex marriage to be performed in the official residence of the mayor. They’ve also made the rounds in the frantic days before their wedding, telling their story to NPR, and filming a segment with Bloomberg on This Week with Christiane Amanpour.

“We’re writing a book: How to get married in 17 days,” Feinblatt said, sitting in a hotel lobby on West 44th Street. They had just finished the NPR interview and were on their way to their respective offices downtown. Eventually. Read More

    THEY CAN NOW!

First, let’s clear up one misconception.  It is not “gay-marriage” it is marriage equality!  Get it?  EQUALITY!!!  Equal rights for all Americans!!!

Once upon a time in America, Jews could not enter and/or join “restricted” country clubs, communities, hotels, resorts, and schools … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, ‘blacks’ could not join the military … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, ‘blacks’ could not play for major league ball clubs … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, mixed race couples could not marry … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, ‘blacks’ could not enter the “whites only” section of busses and lunch counters, and “whites only” restaurants and restrooms … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, ‘blacks’ could not live in the same communities or attend the same schools and churches as ‘whites’ … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, women could not serve in the military … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in America, homosexuals could not serve openly in the military … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in America, same-gender couples could not enter into marriage-equivalent civil unions or registered partnerships in California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in American, same-gender couples could not marry in Connecticut; Washington, DC; Iowa; Massachusetts; New Hampshire; New York; Vermont; and the Coquille Indian Tribe in Oregon … well, THEY CAN NOW!

Once upon a time in the world, same-gender couples could not marry in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden … well, THEY CAN NOW!

On June 17th the United Nations endorsed the rights of ‘gay’ and lesbian and transgender people for the first time in its history; expressing “grave concern” about abuses because of sexual orientation, and commissioning a global report on discrimination against homosexuals.

In 1996 only 27% of Americans supported marriage equality.
By 2004 that number jumped to 42%.
Last year the number of marriage equality proponents totalled 44%.
This year it is up nine points to 53%.

Do you see a pattern here?  In 15 years the support for marriage equality in America has jumped 15 points—from 27% to 53%.  In other words, it doubled!  In other words, today marriage equality advocates are the majority.

In 1964 Bob Dylan wrote the prophetic lyrics to “The Times They Are a-Changin’” which was the title song of the album he released in January 1965.

His message was clear, the tide has turned, the times are truly changing.  Now the narrow-minded Americans who worship the Homophobic Trinity … BIGOTRY & HATRED & IGNORANCE … are in the minority.  In the end, truth and freedom will always triumph over animosity and oppression.

Now in America for the first time in history, ‘gay’ history will be taught in public schools.  It may continue to be an uphill battle, but make no mistake about it … we’re on a roll and “WE SHALL OVERCOME!”

    HETEROSEXUALS, HOMOPHOBIA & TELEVISION

Every time I hear of another small victory in the laboriously slow process of obtaining equal rights for homosexuals, at first I find myself rejoicing … and then I pause.  Is it really appropriate to celebrate when homosexuals have been given yet another crumb from the cake of equal rights, the RIGHTS that were declared in 1776 and guaranteed by the Constitution in 1787?

The Constitution clearly mandates EQUALITY for ALL Americans.  Homosexuals are American citizens, and there is no provision in the Constitution for second class citizens.  That glorious document does not say, “Equal rights for everyone except homosexuals.”  Enough with the crumbs already, it has been 235 years!  We are entitled to the whole cake, and we want it … now!

The homosexual community (counting ONLY those who are NOT closeted) represents 15% to 18% of the American population, and the only thing that they want is their constitutionally decreed EQUAL RIGHTS.  It is not complicated.  Contrary to the erroneous claims of our detractors, we do not want special privileges or special rights, and we do not have any hidden agenda.  Quite simply, all we want is the rights that are enjoyed by all other American citizens, and nothing more.

The only group in America that has an agenda vis-à-vis homosexuals is the White American Christian Oppressors, the WACOs.  Because I am a Christian myself, I know that there are some decent Christians in America, but over the years I have become more and more reluctant to admit that I am a Christian, primarily because I am appalled and ashamed by all of the evil that is done by so-called Christians in the name of MY God and MY Jesus.

The WACOs worship the Homophobic Trinity:  BIGOTRY & HATRED & IGNORANCE.  The WACOs are destroying the very fabric of American society and the foundation of the American ideal … a secular country where everyone (regardless of age, capability, creed, gender, orientation, physicality and/or race) is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

What boggles the mind is the degree to which heterosexuals seem to fear homosexuals.  It begs the question … what, exactly, are they afraid of?  The answer is quite clear, and ol’ Will Shakespeare said it best when he wrote, “The lady doth protest too much.”

Homophobia does not mean that one is afraid of homosexuals; it means that one is afraid of the homosexual that they fear exists within themselves,

The more a so-called ‘straight’ man or woman denigrates homosexuals, the more likely it is that he/she is a deeply closeted homosexual.  A truly heterosexual person who is secure with his/her sexuality, masculinity or femininity, is not uncomfortable about ‘gay’ people, and has absolutely no reason to malign homosexuals.

What these homophobes don’t understand is that homosexuality is NORMAL … different from the majority, but nonetheless normal.  Perhaps it is a matter of perspective.  My father bought our first television in 1949; it was the first in our neighbourhood.  At the time I was four, so it is fair to say that television and I grew-up together.

In all of my 62 years as a viewer, one thing I have noticed is that all of the television shows have always been overrun by heterosexual characters, doing their heterosexual thing (i.e., being heterosexual) … relentlessly shoving their heterosexuality down our throats!

Don’t misunderstand me.  There is nothing wrong with being heterosexual—if that is what one “chooses” to be.  However, why do heterosexuals have to flaunt it all of the time? Everywhere!  They’re ‘straight’ … we get it.  But why can’t they keep it to themselves, rather than constantly rubbing their heterosexuality in our faces?
