Baz Lurhmann is really devoted to taking The Great Gatsby from Great Neck to the Outback. The adaptation’s director has cast Australian supermodel Gemma Ward in the film, which has begun filming in, where else, Australia.
The production has already cast Aussies Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Callan McAuliffe, Elizabeth Debicki and Isla Fisher (she grew up there, so that counts) and more are sure to be on the way. How authentic, mate!
The Observer reached out to Ms. Ward’s representation to try and confirm which of F. Scott’s characters she will play, but we have yet to hear back.
Of the female roles up for grabs, the most prominent may be Catherine, Myrtle Wilson’s sister who accompanies Nick Carraway and Tom Buchanan to the party at the McKee’s apartment on Fifth Avenue — best known for the moment when Tom clocks Myrtle in the face. Fitzgerald describes her as “a slender, worldly girl of about thirty” — Ms. Ward is 24 — “with a solid sticky bob of red hair, and a complexion powdered milky white.”
Sounds like that could work. If not, maybe Ms. Ward’s been cast as Nick’s Finnish maid, but we doubt it.
Ms. Ward is best known for her modeling career, which exploded before she turned 18 but appeared to end, rather abruptly, in 2008. She has admitted that the break came about because of Heath Ledger. They spent Christmas together, in Perth, Australia, just weeks before he was found dead in Soho.
Mr. Ward will fly down in the next few days to start filming. Gemma! You’re going to miss New York Fashion Week! Come back next year, maybe?
