DeWeese gets police and fire union backing

The Presidents of the New Jersey State Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association and the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association Wednesday night in Atlantic City announced their respective unions’ endorsement of Dave DeWeese for state Senate in Legislative District 1.

The seat is currently held by state Sen. Jeff Van Drew, (D-1), Dennis.

FMBA President Bill Lavin and PBA President Tony Wieners each addressed the crowd of nearly 100 police officers and firefighters assembled at a fundraiser for DeWeese sponsored by the FMBA at the Golden Nugget casino.

“It is truly an honor to have the support of the police officers of the PBA and the firefighters of the FMBA,” said DeWeese, an attorney and former municipal judge. “Like all of you, I was upset that public workers were demonized in the pension and benefit reform debate.   The focus of criticism should have been on the politicians who sat in Trenton for the past decade while the system was undermined and damaged by their votes.  Reform became necessary, not because police officers and firefighters were getting too much, but because the politicians in Trenton had so badly mismanaged the system.”
