The South Street Seaport Museum will receive $2 million in grants from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the city announced this morning, part of $17 million in post 9/11 grants for the recovery of downtown nonprofits.

The Seaport Museum received the largest grant of any institution included in the package and the cash injection comes at a time of financial difficultiy for the institution. This spring the museum was in talks to outsource upkeep on its historic ships.

The 38 grants went to a diverse group of downtown organiztions from the River-to-River festival to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Not included in the grants was the Park 51 mosque and community center known to its detractors as the “Ground Zero mosque.”
