The announced departure of Bookish CEO Paulo Lemgruber before the site has even launched marks a rather inauspicious beginning for the new company, a joint venture between Penguin, Hachette Book Group, Simon & Schuster and AOL that has been described as the Pandora, Pitchfork and/or Netflix of books. Last time we checked in with Bookish they were previewing the site for friends and family, but an official launch date has not yet been announced. The new CEO is Carolyn Marks, a native of Australia who comes to Bookish from Meredith, where according to a press release she was the first general manager of the company’s "digital Parents and Lifestyle platforms." Before that Ms. Marks was the founding general manager for the Daily Beast.

No word yet why Mr. Lemgruber, who earlier said he was recruited to lead the company, left "to pursue other opportunities," nor about who instigated his departure. In an interview following an announcement about the project last spring, Mr. Lemgruber said the site was expected to launch this past summer. Editor-in-chief Charlie Rogers will remain in his position.
