The Big Sale: Sotheby's to Auction Papers of Raymond Chandler in December

Sotheby’s will auction off the books and papers of author Raymond Chandler at its sale of fine books and manuscripts on December 13. (Thanks to the TimesArtsBeat blog for alerting us to this.) Among the lots included in the sale will be a copy of the author’s first novel, The Big Sleep (which introduced the world to one of the great detective characters of all time, Philip Marlowe), dedicated to the author from himself: “For me without my compliments” (estimated price $60,000 to $80,000).

Other lots include a copy of James M. Cain’s novel Three of a Kind, signed by Cain and thanking Chandler for writing the screenplay for Double Indemnity (estimated at $15,000 to $20,000), and Chandler’s first draft of the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train ($7,000 to $10,000).

Also included in the sale is a signed photograph of Houdini, several inscribed early editions of Hemingway’s big novels and a 1920 edition of Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day.
