Byliner, one of several publishers specializing in e-books longer than a magazine article and shorter than full-length books, has announced it will now publish fiction as well as non-fiction. "Rules for Virgins," a 43-page story by Amy Tan, is the first work of fiction from the author of The Joy Luck Club in six years. Byliner describes the story as "the startlingly sensual tale of an aging master courtesan instructing her beautiful young protégé in the ways of love and business in 1912 Shanghai."

As we reported earlier this year, Byliner can offer a lucrative business model for bestselling authors like Ms. Tan.

In a press release, Byliner said that the imprint will publish work that ranges in length from short stories to novellas. “Many authors who have either written Byliner Originals or had their nonfiction showcased in our archives happen to be very gifted fiction writers as well,” said Byliner editorial director and co-founder Mark Bryant in a statement.
