Rep. Paul Ryan Not a Supporter of SOPA, Says Spokesperson

A spokesman for Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI), emailed Betabeat this morning to request a correction on our story about the Reddit-engendered crusade against the politician. “I’m unclear on how you could derive Rep. Ryan supports SOPA from the letter you link to in the post,” spokesman Kevin Seifert wrote, referring to this letter Mr. Ryan’s office sent to a constituent who wrote in ostensibly as a supporter of the Stop Online Piracy Act. The letter does not say whether Mr. Ryan supports SOPA, just that he will follow the legislation carefully and consider the constituent’s comments if the bill were to come before him for a vote.

“Congressman Ryan provided a legislative update on the status of the proposal to inquiring constituents, he has never been a co-sponsor or supporter of this legislation,” Mr. Seifert said in an email. Read More

yo i thought for sure people hated paul ryan more for that calamity of a budget proposal than for the canoodling he did with ron wyden, but idk what is a “reddit” anyway

Not having a stance on SOPA is also unacceptable.  Ryan was chosen because he is politically vulnerable and his opponent has come out firmly against SOPA.  Reddit is in the process of vetting a DEM target who is also vulnerable and whose opponent will come out against SOPA.

So, “Mr. Ryan and his spokesman, Mr. Seifert, are now frantically trying to change the impression of Mr. Ryan as a SOPA supporter.” But they decided that it is best not to speak against SOPA or its proposed measures. Reddit users may have been misguided to think that Mr. Ryan supports SOPA, but trying to replace Mr. Ryan who still isn’t explicitly opposed to the bill or its measures with Mr. Zerban who has, is in line with the goal of never having SOPA or a SOPA-like bill passed.
