(Still? It feels like Jan. 3 already.) The season seems to provide the ideal excuse to partake in activities considered preposterous any other time of year. Listening to carolers on the street? In August we’d certainly tell them to pipe down! Paying our doorman a midwinter perk? That’s his job for god sakes! Today is no exception, as we take our two yellow labs (Babe and Paley) to the ASPCA’s annual blessing of the animals. That’s right, this afternoon we’re going to stand in a foul-smelling church amid a cacophonous concert of barks, chirps, yaps and bleats waiting to have our canine companions receive the Spirit from both a rabbi and a minister (a local imam laughed hysterically before declining the invitation). Why, you ask? Well, why not! An annual dose of religious goodwill never hurt anyone, whether bi- or quadrupedal. We’ll happily play along for the next few weeks if it means an ecumenical pass for our innate urban cynicism for the rest of the year.

The ASPCA’s Blessing of the Animals, Christ Church, 520 Park Avenue at 60th Street, 2 to 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
